Depending on the water provided in your area, you might have already heard of the numerous health claims about alkaline water. In fact, a lot of people claim that it slows down the process of aging and regulates the pH level of your body.
The most commonly pointed out benefit that comes from alkaline water is that it prevents chronic diseases such as cancer. What is all the other hype surrounding alkaline water?
What is “alkaline” water?
“Alkaline” is the pH level of the water. The pH level is the scale used to measure just how acidic the water is or how alkaline it is on a scale of 0 to 14. For example, if the pH level of something is 1, that means it is incredibly acidic. Something with a pH level of 13 is considered very alkaline.
Alkaline water has a tremendously high pH level compared to the regular drinking water that most households have on tap. Due to this, a lot of supporters of alkaline water strongly believe in the claims that it can reduce the acidity of your body. Normal tap water generally has neutral pH levels of around 6 to 7. Alkaline water usually ranges from the pH levels of 8 to 9.
Is alkaline water natural or artificial?
The water that is considered alkaline naturally passes through rocks and as it does so brings along with it different minerals that increase the alkaline level. There are a lot of companies that sell tools like ionizers claiming that they make the water alkaline through a process called electrolysis.
The manufacturers of these ionizers also claim that electricity is the key when it comes to diffusing the molecules from the water to reduce the acidity levels and make it more alkaline.
Though doctors and researchers alike claim that this is not the case, a study done by the World Health Organization (WHO) is neutral on whether low mineral content water is any different from alkaline water so there is no strong stance on both sides.
Where can you buy alkaline water?
A lot of alkaline water that is sold to the masses is done so through grocery stores and drug stores. Water ionizers are often sold in equipment shops and large chain stores such as Ikea and Walmart. You can also order different water ionizers online like e-stores such as Amazon.
How safe is alkaline water?
Alkaline water is considered safe by the majority of health professionals though they also do not back the claim that it has health improving effects. According to different university studies, there is simply not enough scientific evidence to support these claims. The said claims are also considered to be more marketing claims and promotional strategies rather than actual facts.
Natural alkaline water consumption is considered safe as long as it contains natural minerals. You should, however, still keep in mind that artificial alkaline water is not the same as natural ones since it goes through an entirely different process. This means that it contains fewer minerals that many say improve the health of a person.
Over consumption of alkaline water, in general, might lead to greater health risks when compared to drinking normal drinking water from the tap.
As always, moderation is key with anything that you put inside your body. Whether you are someone who drinks natural alkaline water, artificial alkaline water or just normal drinking water, you have to keep in mind that you also have to make sure that you are drinking only enough of what you need to and not go overboard simply because you heard that it has health benefits. Stay safe and stay healthy!
